It’s been years since I tried Bulletproof Coffee for the first time. I heard about it from my friend who tried to convince me that mixing coffee with butter and coconut oil instead of eating my morning (more or less) healthy breakfast is the way to dramatically improve my energy level and productivity.

I hesitated a bit, but finally, I decided to try Bulletproof Coffee and see what happens.

And I’m happy I did so. I can honestly admit that drinking Bulletproof Coffee positively influenced my life. 

Why this happened and what is Bulletproof Coffee (BP Coffee)? Let me tell you more about it.

What is Bulletproof Coffee?

“What the hell just happened to me? I’m impressed. And it’s much stronger than I thought!”

This is what I said to myself after I drank Bulletproof Coffee (BP) for the first time.

You know, I am well aware of the Placebo effect, but I’ve always been somehow objective. I learned how to separate ideas from reality. Since I’ve been experimenting with nootropics and food supplements for several years, I found a successful technique that minimizes the effect of the Placebo effect.

So, what I can definitely tell you right away – Bulletproof Coffee works. And if you want to improve your cognitive performance and energy level, you should give it a try and see how it works for you.

After I tested BP Coffee for the first time, I immediately wondered if it is something I could drink over a longer period without negative side effects.

To understand if drinking BP Coffee leaves unwanted consequences, we have to understand how it is made.

As you might know, coffee, in general, contains essential nutrients like B vitamins, manganese, and potassium. Coffee also has loads of antioxidants, which reduce your risk of chronic degenerative diseases and keep your brain sharp.

Drinking coffee will make your brains sharper (the brain cells can communicate faster) and improve your mood.

Now, real BP Coffee contains Grass-fed butter and Brain Octane Oil. According to Dave, “healthy fat will sustain your energy for hours, balance hormones, and boost cognitive function. With butter, you’re not only getting essential fatty acids and other nutrients, it helps make the creamiest cup of coffee you’ll ever have.”

In addition, Brain Octane Oil is important because it raises fat-burning, brain-fueling molecules in your body called ketones. Different types of fats have different jobs. Is Drinking Coffee with Butter a Good Idea? 

According to the founder, drinking BP Coffee is much better for your performance than eating your (healthy) breakfast.

If you ask me – I’d recommend drinking Bulletproof Coffee now and then, but I wouldn’t completely substitute it for your breakfast. 

Bulletproof Coffee is a perfect “tool” to overcome your peaks. It’s also a drink that quickly improves your mood and provides necessary energy for the hard days.

It tastes delicious (at least in my opinion), it’s easy to prepare (more about it below), it isn’t completely unhealthy, it’s a drink made out of natural compounds and it delivers on its promises.

However, I still believe that drinking Bulletproof Coffee instead of eating your morning breakfast is rather unhealthy. Mainly due to the lack of nutrients your body receives with drinking coffee. Also, caffeine is a neuro-stimulant, so taking it too much could make us dependable. It’s not just the physical addiction that worries me. It’s more about the lack of this super-heroic-can-do-it-all feeling that your start missing once you quit drinking this powerful morning elixir as I like to call it.

Based on the articles written about Bulletproof coffee, I couldn’t find a scientific research against drinking it, but neither for it. What you can find are several stories of people who tried it out like me and shared their experience with the world. That’s what we can rely on.

Now, imagine that you substitute your morning vitamins, minerals and proteins you get from a healthy breakfast with a bunch of healthy fats and calories. That doesn’t sound too smart to do it every single morning.

Sometimes, you have to decide between a healthy, less powerful alternative and a less healthy, more powerful alternative.

If your diet is balanced and you live a (more or less) healthy lifestyle, you can risk a bit by adding semi-healthy stuff in your diet to boost your performance.

A precondition for that – you need a healthy lifestyle.

So, a big YES to drinking Bulletproof Coffee, but don’t do it every day!

How to prepare Bulletproof Coffee?

I was sure you wonder how to prepare Bulletproof Coffee.

The idea of getting an additional boost in the morning sounds just too thrilling, doesn’t it? I completely understand you.

In order to get the most out of drinking it, you have to prepare Bulletproof Coffee in the right way. I didn’t invent this mixture, so I more or less use the advice of Dave.

Her is the step-by-step process of preparing Bulletproof Coffee:

  1. Brew 1 cup (0,2 – 0,3 L) of coffee (Dave suggests using filtered water)
  2. Add in 1-2 tablespoons of Brain Octane Oil or a coconut oil (I’d recommend starting with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil)
  3. Add 1-2 tablespoons of grass-fed, unsalted butter
  4. Mix it (preferably in a blender) for 20 seconds
  5. Enjoy your morning cocktail

It’s that simple. It only takes a couple of minutes and you’re done. What happens after is an energy rush that is followed by hours and hours of high energy levels and dramatic clarity.

When Should You Drink Bulletproof Coffee?

I often hear people wondering when is the best time of the day to drink Bulletproof Coffee.

My recommendation is to drink it early in the morning, after your morning meditation/training/shower or whatever you do after you wake up.

I usually wake up around 7 AM, so I drink coffee at around 7.30 to 8 AM. My energy stays very high for several hours, usually until my lunch at around noon. This is also the most creative part of my day, where I tackle most of my challenges.

What I wouldn’t recommend is drinking Bulletproof Coffee after 5 PM. Caffeine stays up to 2 days in your body (even though most of it goes out in about 5 hours). Because of this fact, drinking Bulletproof Coffee, which is much stronger than the normal coffee, could negatively influence your sleep.

And since I once tried drinking BP Coffee at around 8 PM and couldn’t fall asleep until around 3 AM, I would really suggest drinking it in the morning.

Alternatives to Bulletproof Coffee?

Bulletproof Coffee works, but is there something stronger available for you?

Well, there are 2 similar alternatives I want to mention – Titanium Tea and Yerba Mate Tea. 

Titanium Tea, promoted by Tim Ferriss, is a mixture of Aged Pu-Erh (puer), Japanese Sencha (Green tea) or Turmeric Tea, a tablespoon of non-salted butter and a tablespoon of coconut oil (or MCT oil).

Similar ingredients – similar effect. With one small difference.

Titanium Tea is definitely not as delicious as Bulletproof Coffee is. But give it a try and you’ll see what tastes better for you.

Compared to Bulletproof Coffee and Titanium Tea, Yerba Mate delivers the smoothest energy boost and it is definitely the healthiest alternative.

I usually drink Yerba Mate when I do more creative work.  If you are in a hurry and you are trying to reach your deadline, then I’d suggest you drinking Bulletproof Coffee or Titanium Tea.

1. Can I use coconut oil instead of Brain Octane Oil?

Well, most likely not. If your diet is healthy (and you eat fats instead of carbohydrates), then your metabolism will take care that you don’t crash.

3. How does BP coffee taste?

If I’m not completely sure how healthy it is, I can say that the majority of you will love the taste. It tastes a bit funny at the beginning, but you quickly get used to.

4. Can I drink more than 1 BP Coffee per day?

You probably don’t need more than 1 per day. Try drinking one and if you feel like you need more (and your body can handle it), go ahead, but don’t exaggerate.

5. Would you recommend drinking Bulletproof Coffee every day?

Probably not – but 1-2 times per week should be ok!
