F. lux is a great tool for optimizing your late night work

What is F.lux?
When I was first told about f.lux, I wasn’t really sure what this software is all about and why anyone would use it.
I anyhow decided to download and give it a try for a couple of weeks.
After about a week I understood how powerful f.lux actually is.
Since then, I’ve used probably every single day.
F.lux is actually quite a simple, but a very useful software (for Mac and Windows) that adopts the color of your screen accordingly to the daytime.
F.lux changes the color of your screen according to the current time – the color gets warmer at night (more orange), and lighter during the day (more blueish).
During the night, your screen will look totally orange.
To make f.lux work, you only have to set up your time zone, insert the hour when you usually wake up, and that’s basically it.
The rest will happen automatically.
Why Should You Use F.lux?
Honestly, it takes some time to get used to f.lux.
But once you do, you’ll really appreciate it.
So, why should you use it?
Here are the 3 main benefits of using F.lux:
- You will soon notice how your eyes are less tired after working hours on your computer, smartphone, or tablet
- F.lux will positively influence your sleep 
- Working late at night is easier and more enjoyable
I am currently using it on my Mac since I often work late at night.
If necessary, you can turn it off, or change it to the Movie mode.
Even though I would love to use it on my smartphone and tablet as well, I don’t really have to since iPhones and iPad provide an automatic Night Shift mode, which works pretty much the same.

I’d just advise you to use it for at least 1-2 weeks because it takes some time to get used to it.
It is a bit annoying at first, but sooner or later, you’ll love it.
The Science Behind Blue Light
If you don’t use apps like F.lux is, but you are constantly using your computer or smartphone late at night, there is a high chance you’ll encounter sleep issues.
This happens because of the light which is the most powerful cue for resetting the circadian clock.
During the day, there are low levels of melatonin in our body, which reaches a peak during the night and influences our sleep.
This means that if your body gets too much of blue (sun) light during the night, melatonin production will be suppressed and consequently, your sleep will be worse than usual.
If you start your day tired with little energy, your productivity will be much lower than it should be.
Hence, you won’t achieve your daily goals and your motivation will drop.
Therefore, I’d really suggest using F.lux, and I’d make sure your sleep is as good as possible.
There is no other productivity hack more effective than an outstanding sleep.
