MCT Oil Review
When talking about bulletproof coffee, the words coconut oil, and MCT oil often get thrown around quite loosely.
So what exactly is MCT oil?
If you like to eat healthily, then you probably already know the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats.
A simple eye test will quickly reveal what sort of fat you have in your hands.
If it’s liquid at room temperature, then what you have is a product that is mostly made of unsaturated fat (think olive oil).
If, however, it stays hard while sitting on your kitchen counter, it’s a product that mostly contains saturated fats (for example, butter).
Unfortunately, saturated fats commonly get a bad reputation in the Western world and are seen as the micronutrient you should not be eating.
When consumed in excess amounts, saturated fats were thought to raise your LDL levels and therefore increase the risk of a heart attack.
These assumptions are slowly but surely being put to rest by recent studies, which show that saturated fats may even lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. 
Now that we cleared up the air that eating saturated fats will not give you an instant heart attack, let’s see what MCT is.
The abbreviation MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides, which is a class of saturated fats that contain 6-10 carbon atoms in their chemical structure.
It has been found to have many health benefits – ranging from improved brain function to improved weight management.
What makes MCT oil so special you might’ve asked yourself.
Medium-chain fats are easily digestible and sent directly to the liver, where they have a thermogenic (fat-burning) effect.
This means the fats you get by eating MCT oil will not be stored as fat, but will instead be processed directly into energy!
It is also flavorless and odorless. And like any other fat, it does not mix well with liquids.
About 65% of the fatty acids found in coconut oil are medium-chain triglycerides, making coconut oil the perfect source of MCTs, along with palm oil and dairy fats, found in butter or cheese.

MCTs do not undergo the same process of absorption as long-chain fats.
Upon ingestion, the MCTs get quickly delivered to the liver, where they are oxidized into ketones.
Ketones are a byproduct of the body breaking down fat and is an easily accessible form of energy, especially when the overall carbohydrate intake is low.

Because MCT oil raises ketones, which suppress ghrelin while increasing cholecystokinin. 
And this combo makes you feel full for hours.
MTC Oil Dosage
Through trial and error, I’ve found out that the best way is to slowly work your way up to adding up to a tablespoon or 15 grams of MCT to a meal or mix it into a creamy bulletproof coffee in the morning.
For maximal brain and health-boosting effects, add 2-3 tablespoons a day to your regular diet.
As a friendly piece of advice, it is best to add the oil to a meal or beverage to avoid unnecessary nausea or stomach discomfort.
And as a side note, be careful with MCT oil if you are trying to be in a caloric deficit (meaning you try to burn more calories than you eat).
Remember, 1 gram of fat equals nine calories, so the calories from MCT oil add up quickly!
MCT Oil Side Effects
In the first few days of adding MCTs to your diet, you might experience slight feelings of nausea, stomach discomfort, intestinal gas, or in extreme cases, vomiting.
Once your body gets used to ingesting MCTs (which should not last more than a few days), you are good to go.
Unless you take too much oil at once (I would not go past 15 g in a single serving), MCT should not cause any side effects.
In my experience and also of my girlfriend, there were no side effects whatsoever.
