Panax Ginseng Review: 5 Benefits & Side Effects
Panax Ginseng is an adaptogen that can improve alertness and cognitive function. Besides, it provides a whole range of benefits. But should you really consider supplementing it? Check out my full Panax Ginseng review.
Panax Ginseng is a species of plant that grows in Korea, China and parts of Siberia.
It is not to be confused with other types of Ginseng as they do other things and have different properties.
The root of Ginseng is a natural remedy that can be taken in supplement form; the plant needs to mature for five years to reach full potency.
Prices of Ginseng can be quite high because of this, but it’s worth paying a bit more for higher quality sources of produce.
The dried raw roots are called white Ginseng if the root has been dried and stemmed it is known as red Ginseng. Extracts from the berries can also be used in supplementation.
Ginseng can be supplemented for a multitude of health benefits, including immune-boosting, heart health, improved energy levels, combat stress, and impotence.
But should you really supplement it?
Panax Ginseng Extract Benefits
Panax Ginseng has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine.
The main Panax Ginseng benefits are:
increases your energy
decreases your stress
boosts your immune system
improves your heart health
But let’s have a look at the benefits a bit more in details.
1. Panax Ginseng Can Improve Your Cognitive Performance
Panax Ginseng is most known for its benefits for improving cognitive performance, especially our memory.
There is a study which followed 30 healthy people who consumed 200 mg of Panax ginseng for about four weeks.
The result? Improvement in mental health, social functioning, and mood.
I found another study, which examined how a single dose of either 200 or 400 mg of Panax ginseng affects mental performance in healthy adults before and after a 10-minute mental test.
The result? Unexpectedly, the 200-mg dosage was more effective, but both dosages improved mental performance of people.
We still don’t know why the lower dosage was more effective, but it gives a great indication of how much Ginseng should we supplement on a daily basis.
Other studies show the positive benefits of supplementing Ginseng on our cognitive performance:
One study found positive effects in people with Alzheimer’s; another research shows that 400 mg of Panax Ginseng improves math skill in people.
2. Panax Ginseng Increases Energy
Panax Ginseng is often used as an energy booster. It’s known that when combined with caffeine, it can provide even stronger effects.
Various studies show positive benefits, but there is one study I’d like to point to.
This study shows that supplementing up to 2 grams of Panax Ginseng per day increased energy in people with chronic fatigue, while they experienced less mental and physical fatigue.
Another study that looked at 155 other studies shows that supplementing Panax Ginseng can also improve physical activity in healthy people.
If we also consider animal studies, we know that Panax Ginseng contains compounds that can lower oxidative stress, and increase energy production in cells.
3. Panax Ginseng Can Decrease Inflammation
Not only is Panax Ginseng an effective nootropic, but it can provide a whole range of health effects.
One of them is its effect on inflammation.
As you might know, Panax Ginseng contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties.
One study investigated the effects of supplementing 2 grams of Korean red ginseng extract three times per day for a week.
What did the study find?
Well, people who were given Ginseng supplements had significantly lower inflammation markers.
Another study followed 71 postmenopausal women who took 3 grams of red ginseng per day for 12 weeks.
The research concludes that Ginseng can reduce oxidative stress and increase enzyme activities in people.
There are other studies done on animals but are less relevant for people.
4. Panax Ginseng Can Improve Erectile Dysfunction
Panax Ginseng can work in various ways to help you.
A study that was published by the International Journal of Impotence had a look at the use of ginseng extract in 119 men who had erectile dysfunction. Each man was given four Ginseng berry extract tablets that equated to a dose of 350 mg per day, others were given a placebo, and this was tested over eight weeks.
During the study and after, men were tested using two measurements: One method assessed premature ejaculation, and other was based on the International Index of Erectile Function.
The study concluded that Ginseng could be used as an alternative therapy to help improve sexual activity in men who have erectile dysfunction (ED).
It is not fully understood why Panax ginseng can help with ED, it once thought to be related to hormonal issues, but further tests have proven that testosterone levels are not increased when taking this supplement.
Another way Ginseng could improve libido is by increasing levels of nitric oxide, known to improve blood flow and relax the muscles in the penis.
5. Panax Ginseng Can Boost Immune System
As I mentioned earlier, Panax Ginseng contains anti-inflammatory compounds, but also antioxidants.
Most studies have been done on people with cancer (and not on healthy people), but the results have been promising.
One particular study shows that taking red ginseng extract improved immune system markers in people with advanced stomach cancer in just three months.
What’s even more interesting is that the same study suggested that people who regularly supplement Ginseng have a higher chance of living a life without any diseases.
How much higher?
Stunning 35% higher chance for a disease-free life, and 38% higher survival rate. How cool is that?
Panax Ginseng Side Effects
Panax ginseng is relatively safe to use, and no side effects are common. Some warn that hormonal imbalances may occur if it is taken for prolonged periods of up to 6 months.
One of the more common side effects reported is insomnia. People may also suffer menstrual problems, increased heart rate, loss of appetite, or headaches, but these things listed only happen in rare cases.
Other notice side effects are the following:
Increased heart rate
Increased blood pressure
But as mentioned before, these effects seem to happen rarely.
Panax Ginseng Dosage
Recommended doses of Panax Ginseng are very much based upon your goals.
For improved mental function, it is safe to take between 200 to 400 mg once or twice daily.
This should be done in cycles of no more than 12 weeks; then users should take a break of 4 to 6 weeks.
The dose for help with erectile dysfunction is much higher at 1400 to 2700 mg of Panax ginseng divided up into 2-3 doses throughout the day.
This dosage is also safe to be taken for up to 12 weeks at a time, but then the user should have a break.
For sexual arousal in women, up to 3 grams of Korean ginseng can be taken for up to 8 weeks. It can be used in combination with other libido enhancers.
Panax Ginseng Reviews
Panax Ginseng is getting more and more popular.
You can find a lot of reviews and feedbacks online, but I gathered two different feedbacks on Panax Ginseng for your better understanding of what to expect:
“I got a 300 pack of 648mg from vitacost been taking 4-5 a day. I’ve also been taking vitamin B and D as I’ve read people who don’t get enough have trouble as well. I’ve been waking up with morning wood after about two weeks. I get firm and I seem to last longer. It has given me some trouble sleeping though.”
“40 and have had increasing issues maintaining an erection or even getting close to full strength. This was becoming a problem as a new girlfriend and I started to become intimate. I found out about Panax Ginseng and decided to try it. Took 600mg the day before, and 900mg 3 hours before. I had no problems maintaining, including after finishing once. There was a definite difference! I did notice a couple problems afterwords though. About 6-8 hours after the second dosage I noticed that I felt like I went into massive MAN mode, craving red meat, feeling especially vibrant… almost an invincibility feeling. etc. Also had some insomnia issues. For me, the jury is still out for me in how the side effects are maintained, but it definitely did the job I wanted it to do.”
