As I mentioned before, L-Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that you get from food. Then it is converted to L-Tyrosine and from there to L-Dopa.

D-Phenylalanine is a synthetic version, created in the lab. Even though it mirrors L-Phenylalanine, it has a different working mechanism.

So, how about DL-Phenylalanine?

Well, DL-Phenylalanine is a mixture of both, L- and D-Phenylalanine.

It is believed that this mix should get the best out of both types of the amino acid. However, more studies have to be done to confirm that.

Many foods contain phenylalanine, so you can get it from both plant and animal products.
