Cognium is a brain supplement that contains only one under-researched compound, Silk Protein Hydrolysate.

Developed by the company Natrol, this supplement could improve memory in as little as four weeks.

Compared to tens of brain supplements, Cognium is the only one that I tested so far with only one compound. And it’s the only one that may bring only one benefit.

Despite the lack of effective nootropics, I still decided to do a complete review.

The main questions I had were: Does it work? What does the science say? And should you supplement it?

Here is what I found out.

Cognium Ingredients

Cognium contains only one compound, CERA-Q Powder. This is a 60% Silk Protein Hydrolysate.

What exactly is this compound?

Well, my search on two of my favorite sites for research – PubMed and Examine, showed 0 results.

I couldn’t find any reliable studies or even basic know-how about this compound at first. What a bummer!

Anyhow, I continued my search on other sites and I came across a few Korean studies on this compound. Sadly, some were in the Korean language, so I didn’t understand anything.

After quite some research, I finally managed to find one in English. It showed that supplementing 280 mg of this compound can improve memory in healthy adults in just 3 weeks! [1]

Before I make any conclusions, I would need to see more studies to confirm the results. Also, a peer-reviewed, double-blind placebo study would be very welcome in this case.

Anyhow, if this only research that I found is correct, this means that supplementing Cognium should improve your memory.

But there is an issue – the optimal dosage in the study was 280 mg of Silk Protein Hydrolysate. Cognium, on the other hand, contains a special powder, which has only 60% of Silk Protein Hydrolysate.

What’s more problematic is that the recommended daily dosage by Natrol is only 1 tablet, which contains only 100 mg of CERA-Q powder, hence, only 60 mg of Silk Protein.

Basic math tells you you need to take at least 5 tablets of Cognium per day to see the results that were found in the study. This means taking a 5 times higher dosage compared to the recommended daily dosage!

I don’t know about you, but I would never do it, especially if a product contains such an under-researched compound.

It is simply too risky.

Multiple Fillers

Besides the main ingredient, you can 10 additional compounds in this supplement. I don’t know exactly what’s their role, but some of them are typical fillers found in many capsules to feel up to space or make the structure of all compounds more favorable. Many of my favorite nootropic supplements contain zero fillers.

Based on my research, I do not recommend supplementing Cognium. It lacks ALL essential nootropics, vitamins, and minerals that have proven benefits for improving memory. The only ingredient in this supplement seems to be underdosed, so you would need to take 5 tablets every single day. This would also dramatically increase the price of this supplement.

Cognium Side Effects

I have tried over 100+ nootropic supplements in the past years, including many smart drugs.

I have even received very under-researched racetams from China in a small box with a huge lack of data about the quality of the product. Anyhow, I still decided to give it a try.

However, I am not willing to try Cognium after more research is done.

It is hard to talk about side effects, but once more research is done, we will all know what to expect from this supplement.

Based on my experience, experimenting with under-researched supplements can bring adverse effects such as:

  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Brain fog

So, are Cognium tablets safe? 

I cannot tell, and I believe there are no studies currently done that would confirm the long-term safety of Cognium.

What do other users say about Cognium? First of all, how do you measure if your memory improves? Do users use some kind of tools/memory games, track results, and compare them to before/after taking Cognium?

I believe most people don’t do it. So memory improvement is mainly a subjective thing that people report, which is quite problematic.

That is why I found multiple TERRIBLE reviews from other experts who are reviewing nootropic supplements. They came to a similar conclusion as I did.

When it comes to user reviews, you can find mixed results. Some people are “happy” with the supplement, and others are not.

Where is the truth? As it currently stands, we lack studies to confirm the benefits of this supplement. Until we have them, I cannot recommend the product.
