Bulletproof Coffee Review (Updated 2019): Will BP Coffee Kick Your Ass? 4.56/5 (18)

Bulletproof Coffee is an energy-booster that can dramatically increase your energy, focus and make your day super-productive. But how does it work? How can you prepare it? Do you know the Bulletproof Coffee Recipe?

Bulletproof Coffee is one of the strongest energy-boosters on the market

The energy-boosting effect lasts for hours

It tastes delicious

It takes a bit longer to prepare compared to normal coffee

You might have to get used to the taste

1. What is Bulletproof Coffee?

It’s been years since I tried Bulletproof Coffee for the first time. I heard about it from my friend who tried to convince me that mixing coffee with butter and coconut oil instead of eating my morning healthy breakfast is the way to dramatically improve my energy level and productivity.

Bulletproof Coffee Review – Is Bulletproof Coffee Your Perfect Energy Booster?

I hesitated a bit, but finally, I decided to try it out and see what happens.

From this moment, I’ve been drinking Bulletproof Coffee probably every week. Not only I enjoy the taste of the coffee, but the benefits that it delivers are just amazing.

Let me explain how drinking it changed my life.

“What the hell is that? Damn, I didn’t expect such an energy-kick!”

This is what I said to myself after I drank Bulletproof Coffee (BP) for the first time.

You know, I am well aware of the placebo effect, but in this case, I can tell you – forget about the placebo effect.

BP Coffee is a super strong energy-booster. Yes, it definitely works and it’ll impress you, I’m sure about that.

If you want to improve your mood, energy level and probably even your cognitive performance, you should try it out.

So, what is Bulletproof Coffee exactly?

After I tested BP Coffee for the first time, I immediately wondered if this is something I could drink over a longer period without negative side effects.

To understand if drinking BP Coffee leaves unwanted consequences, we have to understand how it is made.

Bulletproof Coffee is simply coffee, blended with (preferably grass-fed unsalted) butter and coconut oil (or Brain Octane Oil).

I know what you are asking yourself: “Why in the hell would anyone put butter and coconut oil into the coffee?”

Well, one reason could be that it dramatically increases your energy level.

Yup, mixing caffeine and healthy fats will help you have a kick-ass start of the day.

But can you handle it?

2. Bulletproof Coffee Benefits

When it comes to nootropics, certain food supplements or man-made mixtures like Bulletproof Coffee certainly is, it’s quite challenging finding research and facts that would show positive benefits or at least deny any kind of harmful side effects.

In this case, logical thinking combined with our personal experience is basically the best we have.

I’ve made my own research to understand how BP Coffee actually works. I found several articles that discuss how can butter promote brain function, while MCT (Coconut oil) promotes weight-loss. [1]

Based on my personal experience, I can confirm that if you want to lose weight with coffee, you will soon see the first results.

Obviously, adding caffeine (which is a central nervous system stimulant) will end up in a relatively powerful mixture of brain stimulants.

However, I couldn’t find any real study showing the consequences of drinking BP Coffee every day for months or years. We’re still too early for that I’m afraid.

Besides the studies (or the lack of them) I can admit that my experience with Bulletproof Coffee has definitely been fascinating.

When I drink Bulletproof Coffee, I get a huge energy kick about 10-15 minutes after I drank it. It feels somehow medium-strong (it probably depends from person to person) and it lasts for hours.

Your focus is increased, you get a lot of energy and you feel extra productive. Basically, you feel like you unlocked your limitations and nothing can stop you (you want to feel like that all the time, trust me).

The biggest advantage of drinking itis that the effects last for hours (much longer compared to just drinking normal coffee).

In addition, the “crash” that usually comes after drinking coffee never happens. I guess that the combination of grass-fed butter and Brain Octane Oil/coconut oil/MCT oil takes care of that.

Here are the main advantages of bulletproof coffee:

  • Suppressed hunger
  • Mental clarity
  • Steady lasting energy
  • Weightloss

So, here we have a powerful morning cocktail that tastes delicious and gives you a ton of energy.

But is it healthy to drink? Where is the trick? Are we missing something?

3. How Does Bulletproof Coffee work?

As you might know, coffee, in general, contains essential nutrients like B vitamins, manganese, and potassium. Coffee also has loads of antioxidants, which reduce your risk of chronic degenerative diseases and keep your brain sharp.

Drinking coffee will make your brains sharper (the brain cells can communicate faster) and improve your mood.

Now, real BP Coffee contains Grass-fed butter and Brain Octane Oil. According to Dave, “healthy fat will sustain your energy for hours, balance hormones, and boost cognitive function. With butter, you’re not only getting essential fatty acids and other nutrients, it helps make the creamiest cup of coffee you’ll ever have.”

In addition, Brain Octane Oil is important because it raises fat-burning, brain-fueling molecules in your body called ketones. Different types of fats have different jobs. And because of Brain Octane’s molecular structure, it helps you to curb your hunger, lose fat, and kick your brain into a higher gear more than generic MCT oil. It’s more than 4 times as effective as plain coconut oil at raising your ketone levels, aka helping your body to run off of fat instead of sugar. This is what gives you clean-burning energy with no crash for hours at at time.

So what really happens is after you drink a cup of Bulletproof Coffee, you’ll very quickly feel the effects of drinking normal coffee – improved mood and more energy. Just that with Bulletproof Coffee, the effects will be stronger and they’ll last for ever.

4. Is Drinking Coffee with Butter a Good Idea?

According to Dave, drinking Bulletproof Coffee is much better for your performance than eating your (healthy) breakfast.

If you ask me – I’d recommend drinking Bulletproof Coffee now and then, but I wouldn’t completely substitute it for your breakfast.

Bulletproof Coffee is a perfect “tool” to overcome your peaks. It’s also a drink that quickly improves your mood and provides the necessary energy for the hard days.

What do bulletproof coffee taste like?

Bulletproof coffee taste like a rich, creamy, and nuttier latte. It has a rich flavor with a slight touch of butter. Bulletproof coffee definitely tastes delicious, but you have to get used to the taste.

Besides, it’s easy to prepare (check out the bulletproof coffee recipe below), it isn’t completely unhealthy, it’s a drink made out of natural compounds and it delivers on its promises.

However, I still believe that drinking Bulletproof Coffee instead of eating your morning breakfast is rather unhealthy. Mainly due to the lack of nutrients your body receives with drinking coffee. Also, caffeine is a neuro-stimulant, so taking it too much could make us dependable [2]. It’s not just the physical addiction that worries me. It’s more about the lack of this super-heroic-can-do-it-all feeling that your start missing once you quit drinking this powerful morning elixir as I like to call it.

Based on the articles written about Bulletproof coffee, I couldn’t find scientific research against drinking it, but neither for it. What you can find are several stories of people who tried it out like me and shared their experience with the world. That’s what we can rely on.

So if your diet is balanced and you live a (more or less) healthy lifestyle, drinking Bulletproof Coffee on a weekly basis should leave no negative side-effects.

BUT be careful – there’ll be tons of energy you will get. So make sure you’ll smartly use it.

YES to drinking Bulletproof Coffee, but just don’t do it every day.

5. Bulletproof Coffee Recipe (How to prepare Bulletproof Coffee)

Until now you’ve already decided whether you’ll try Bulletproof Coffee or no (and if you read until here, we both know you want to try it out, right?)

The idea of getting an additional boost in the morning sounds just too thrilling, doesn’t it? I completely understand you.

In order to get the most out of drinking it, you have to prepare it in the right way. I didn’t invent this mixture, so I more or less use the advice of Dave.

Her is the Bulletproof Coffee Recipe (step-by-step guide):

  1. Brew 1 cup (8-12 ounces) of coffee (Dave suggests using filtered water)
  2. Add 1-2 tablespoons of Brain Octane Oil or coconut oil (you can find different types of Brain Octane Oil here)
  3. Add 1-2 tablespoons of grass-fed, unsalted butter
  4. Mix it (preferably in a blender) for 20 seconds
  5. Enjoy your morning cocktail

It’s that simple. It only takes a couple of minutes and you’re done. What happens after is an energy rush that is followed by hours and hours of high energy levels and dramatic clarity.

And this is the secret of Bulletproof Coffee.

6. When Should You Drink Bulletproof Coffee?

I often hear people wondering when is the best time of the day to drink Bulletproof Coffee.

My recommendation is to drink it early in the morning, after your morning meditation/training/shower or whatever you do after you wake up.

I usually wake up around 7 AM, so I drink coffee at around 7.30 to 8 AM. My energy stays very high for several hours, usually until my lunch at around noon. This is also the most creative part of my day, when I tackle most of my challenges.

What I wouldn’t recommend is drinking Bulletproof Coffee after 3 PM. Caffeine stays up to 2 days in your body (even though most of it goes out in about 5 hours). Because of this fact, drinking Bulletproof Coffee, which is much stronger than the normal coffee, could harm your sleep. [3]

FYI, once I tried it at 8 PM and couldn’t fall asleep until around 3 AM, so I would really suggest drinking it in the morning.

That’s about it. Just stick to the “morning rule” and you’ll be fine.

7. What Are the Alternatives to Bulletproof Coffee?

Bulletproof Coffee works, but is there something stronger available for you?

Well, there are 2 similar alternatives I want to mention – Titanium Tea and Yerba Mate Tea.

Titanium Tea is a mixture of Aged Pu-Erh (puer), Japanese Sencha (Green tea) or Turmeric Tea, a tablespoon of non-salted butter and a tablespoon of Brain Octane Oil.

Similar ingredients – similar effect. With one small difference.

Titanium Tea is definitely not as delicious as Bulletproof Coffee is. But give it a try and you’ll see what tastes better for you.

I already wrote about Yerba Mate before (click here).

Compared to Bulletproof Coffee and Titanium Tea, Yerba Mate delivers the smoothest energy boost and it is definitely the healthiest alternative.

I usually drink Yerba Mate when I do more creative work.  If you are in a hurry and you are trying to reach your deadline, then I’d suggest you drinking Bulletproof Coffee or Titanium Tea.

8. Where can you buy Bulletproof Coffee?

I would suggest ordering Bulletproof Coffee on Amazon (link).

There you can find different types and sizes of BP Coffee.

The more important part is ordering the right MCT oil.

I’ve tried several of those and my favorite Brain Octane (or MCT oil) is this one >>

I’m sure you will love it as well.

If you need anything else, don’t hesitate to contact me.

9. The Ultimate Combo

Is there something more than “just” Bulletproof Coffee?

Bulletproof Coffee is a perfect energy-booster for you.

But if you combine it with certain nootropics, you’ll be able to do more. Much more!

I usually combine Bulletproof Coffee with Mind Lab Pro, which is probably the best nootropic stack for improving your cognitive performance, clarity and memory.

This is the ultimate combo that’ll open a completely new world for you. But don’t take my words for granted – try it out for yourself & you’ll see!

10. FAQ

  • Can I use coconut oil instead of MCT oil?

The official explanation is that the “MCT oil is four times as effective as coconut oil at raising ketones, those fat-burning, brain-boosting molecules in your body. Throwing coconut oil in your coffee won’t give the same effects.”

While I cannot say there is a 4X difference, I personally noticed that MCT oil is stronger, so I would recommend it. Besides, it’s easier to add it to your coffee than a normal coconut oil.

  • Will my body crash after I drink Bulletproof Coffee?

Does your body crash when you drink coffee? No? Well, then there is nothing to worry about! 😉

  • How does Bulletproof coffee taste?

I can definitely say that the majority of you will love the taste. It’s a creamy-kind-of-coffee. Mmm!

  • Can I drink more than 1 Bulletproof Coffee per day?

You probably don’t need more than 1 per day. Try drinking one and if you feel like you need more (and your body can handle it), go ahead, but don’t exaggerate.

  • Would you recommend drinking Bulletproof Coffee every day?

Probably not – but 1-2 times per week should be ok!

  • Can Bulletproof Coffee upset my stomach?

This can happen, even though it is unlikely. I do not know anyone who had issues with an upset stomach.

  • How are Dave Asprey and Bulletproof Coffee related?

Dave Asprey is the founder of the company Bulletproof that produces original Bulletproof Coffee.

  • Why should I use grass-fed butter?

First of all, grass-fed butter is definitely much healthier than a normal butter. It contains omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotene, vitamins A, D, E,  and antioxidants. Besides, the saturated fat in grass-fed butter slows the absorption of caffeine, which gives you even energy for several hours instead of a caffeine spike and crash.

Hi there, my main goal with this blog is to provide high-quality non-biased content to people, so monetizing was always in the 2nd plan. But thanks for your feedback, I’ll definitely check it out 🙂

I am not doing a ketogenic diet yet, but am trying a few things to see how i like them. I only drink one cup of coffee first thing in the morning per day, is it OK to drink a bullet proof coffee each morning? The other thing I am doing is intermittent fasting I am on the 10/14 plan right now. Thanks!

Hi Joanne, no matter if you are on keto diet or not, Bulletproof coffee is a great energy booster. I’m also not on keto diet, but I drink Bulletproof coffee on a daily bases (at least 5 times a week, but I try not to drink it 2 times/week just to not get “addicted”). Try it out and see how it works for you, but do expect a strong energy boost. Don’t forget to mix it with high-quality MCT oil. Let me know if you have any other questions 🙂

How does this affect your cholesterol, that is my only concern with using the butter.

    • Greg, Founder August 14, 2018 at 5:06 am - Reply

Hi there, I was worried as well, but here is the thing – if you, in general, eat healthy food (I’d consider healthy low in carbohydrates and high in vegetables and healthy fats), then this added fats from butter and mct oil (which are both considered healthy fats) aren’t an issue at all.
I know people who are on BP coffee and monitor their cholesterol level on a 1-2 week basis while following a low-carb diet and all levels are normal! 🙂 Hope this helps. Greg

I ordered an item with an order #786059 and Bulletproof took my money and never shipped my product. I reach customer service and they are not returning my emails or calls. This is very disappointing!

    • Greg, Founder October 27, 2018 at 6:04 pm - Reply

This is absolutely terrible. Where did you order it? Through their website? I’ve never heard anyone had any issues with the customer support, but I can imagine smth is terribly wrong. I’d suggest writing them again and if nothing happens, please send me the print screen of your sent emails and I’ll try contacting them to see what’s going on.

Hi Christine, this is strange..hm, how do you usually react to coffee? Do you feel similar effects? Did you drink enough water during this time? I’d try this as well, then we see what happens. Keep me posted 🙂
